Das Stadium: German Grand Prix takes place on Sunday at Hockenheimring. This track was built by Mercedes-Benz in 1939. The first Formula 1 race in 1970 was won by German-born Austrian domiciled Jochen Rindt in a Lotus 72. It was seven years before Formula 1 would return to the track after Niki Lauda’s near fatal crash at the classic 14.2-mile long Nurburgring. The Austrian driver triumphed in 1977 driving a Ferrari ahead of South African Jody Scheckter in a Wolf. Local driver Hans-Joachim Stuck was third in a Brabham. Mario Andretti remains the only American to win a Formula 1 race at Hockenheimring. The track is famous for the enormous stadium section and claimed the life of legendary Jim Clark in a Formula 2 race in 1968.
