Meet Mirko Bortolotti. This young Italian, who grew up in Austria, is aiming to fly high and accomplish what no other Italian has been able to do since Alberto Ascari in 1953. Bring back the drivers’ crown to the land of Nuvolari and Campari, the home of Maserati and Ferrari.
Now residing near Lake Garda and Vienna, the 19-year old made his mark in single seater racing by dominating the 2008 Italian F3 Championship, notching up nine wins and 15 podium finishes from 16 races. Then, as part of winning the championship, he test drove a Ferrari Formula 1 car and recorded a time faster than Kimi Raikkonen at Fiorano.
This season Bortolotti joined the Red Bull brigade and marched to fourth place finish in the Formula 2 Championship, winning a race in the second round of the season at Brno in Czech Republic.
He made his F3 Euro Series debut in the season finale at Hockenheimring last month and was on the podium in Sunday’s race.
Podcast # 360 features our conversation with Mirko Bortolotti – definitely a man on the move.
