How the West was won: Travel agent Chris Pook booked F1 in the streets of Long Beach in 1976, and the party lasted for seven more years.
The inaugural event was a Ferrari festival with Clay Regazzoni winning over teammate Niki Lauda. The following year Mario Andretti in his Lotus became the first American to win the US Grand Prix. Ferrari fever returned in 1978 & ’79 with Carlos Reutemann and Gilles Villeneuve (photo) taking the top spot respectively.
Nelson Piquet scored the first of his 23 victories here in 1980; during the race Clay Regazzoni suffered career ending injuries when the brakes on his Ensign failed. The final US Grand Prix West in 1983 saw a great come from behind victory for John Watson in his McLaren.
