NASIR AND THE HOST ARE GEARING UP FOR HUNGARY AND THE RETURN OF THE SMILING DINGO RICCIARDO. THIS WEEKS MOTORSPORTS MONDIAL IS STILL BENEFITING FROM THE F1W EUROPEAN TOUR WITH THIS WEEKS INTERVIEW…JOCHEN NEERPASCH!
F1Weekly is pleased to present a conversation with Jochen Neerpasch on podcast # 1001.
He is an important figure in the world of motorsports, winning the Daytona 24 Hour in 1968, working with from Carroll Shelby to Michael Schumacher.
Neerpasch was born in Krefeld with “petrol in my blood.” As a Porsche driver his other achievements include second in the 1968 Sebring 12 Hour race with Vic Elford, and third in the same year at Le Mans with Rolf Stommelen.
After setting up a successful racing program for Ford in Germany, he was invited by American auto executive Bob Lutz to do the same at BMW.
The rest is beautiful and successful history. It led to the BMW Juniors talent academy, and the iconic M1 and BMW art cars.
Neerpasch was managing motorsports program at Mercedes when, with careful planning for the future, he placed a Mercedes junior to enter the cut-throat world of Formula 1.
At Spa in 1991, the young German driver delivered and served serious notice of intent and speed. His name, Michael Schumacher. Need I say more?
Today, Neerpasch is again mentoring BMW Juniors, including young American talent Neil Verhagen.
This conversation took place in Kressbronn, located in the beautiful Bodensee area of Germany.
F1Weekly is extremely thankful for his time in sharing stories of a great life in the fast lane.
