Motorsports Memories celebrates Nasir Hameed! We shall look back at the early years of F1Weekly with Nasir and his Classic Historical Mondial from the 2006 season and his interview of Martin Hines. This was the start of a beautiful podcast between two F1 fans. Thanks for all the letters and love. We miss you Nasir!

Nasir: Born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan he was fascinated by the rich history of Grand Prix racing from an early age, with names like Nuvolari, Ascari, Rosemeyer, Ferrari, Brooklands, Montlhery and Parco Monza. His uncle, who worked for Castrol, helped the cause with company promotional materials.

The racing bug took total control when he discovered Sports Round Up on BBC World Service in the early 1970s and few years later with the discovery of live F1 commentary on the African service of Radio France Internationale with a faded signal and in French sealed the fate.

Had a nice chat with Signor Gian Carlo Minardi. Machismo started in F1 with his team.

“Henri Charpontier was the commentator and I still have vivid memories how he called the final laps of 1977 Swedish GP when Laffite won his and Ligier’s first race after Mario Andretti ran out of “petrol” in his Lotus. In 1982, I attended the 1982 Italian GP where Mario was on pole, then visited Ferrari factory at the invitation of Mauro Forghieri, the famous engineer. Surprisingly, the race winner in a Renault Rene Arnoux was also there as he was going to Ferrari for 1983.

“I used to write to drivers in the United States from Pakistan and got replies from Mario Andretti, Tom Sneva, Parnelli Jones, AJ Foyt, Gordon Johncock and Richard Petty.”
Nasir is also the publisher of vintage Formula 1 calendars on www.saison73.com.
